Last month’s ChangeWave consumer survey showed a major downward shift in spending, along with a worsening in expectations and confidence. Our February results now point to signs of stabilization – though spending remains at relatively weak levels. Unchanged from January, consumers remain anxious about global economic conditions, which continue to affect spending plans. Nonetheless, there are several encouraging takeaways from our February 2-18 survey of 2,079 U.S. consumers. The job outlook is upbeat this month, most spending categories are improved, and nearly all major retailers are holding steady or seeing increases. Worries about inflation and energy costs continue to decline. We’re also seeing a slight improvement in consumer confidence, although expectations continue to deteriorate.
